A CI/CD pipeline is only as trustworthy as the tests running inside it. Bolting on API tests as an afterthought, run manually, occasionally, right before a release, defeats the purpose of continuous delivery. Here is how high-performing teams integrate testing properly.
Test on every commit, not just before release
API tests should run automatically on every pull request, not just as a pre-release gate. This surfaces regressions while the context is still fresh in the author's mind, rather than days later when a release is already queued.
Fail fast, fail clearly
A pipeline that fails with a vague "tests failed" message trains engineers to ignore it. Pipelines that surface the specific failing endpoint, expected vs. actual response, and a likely root cause get fixed immediately instead of being re-run and hoped away.
Treat test infrastructure as production infrastructure
Flaky or slow test environments erode trust in the whole pipeline. Investing in reliable, fast test infrastructure, including mock servers for third-party dependencies, pays for itself many times over in engineering time saved.
